Owens Corning Shingle Repair: The San Jose Owner’s Guide
Most Owens Corning shingle repairs in San Jose run between $350 and $850 installed, depending on how many shingles failed, whether the underlayment beneath them is still sound, and how steep or cut-up your roof is. We carry Owens Corning-compatible shingles on our trucks and can usually match your existing color and profile the same day we look at it. The way most homeowners find out they need this repair is simple: they spot a shingle in the yard after a windy night, see a dark patch on the roof from the street, or notice a water stain blooming on the ceiling after a hard rain.
If you’re reading this, you probably already know which Owens Corning product is on your roof. What you may not know is whether a repair will match, how much it should cost in San Jose, and whether it will hold. We’ll cover all of that here, straight.
Which Owens Corning Models This Applies To
This page covers repair work for the three Owens Corning shingle lines we see most often on San Jose homes: Oakridge, Duration, and the older Supreme line that’s still on thousands of roofs built in the 1990s and early 2000s. Duration shingles have a distinctive fabric strip in the nailing zone called SureNail, and that strip is one of the first things we check when we’re assessing a repair. If the original installer nailed above or below that strip, the shingles fail early, and that’s a compatibility detail most homeowners never hear about.
How to identify what you have: check the underside of a loose shingle for the Owens Corning name and series. If you don’t have a loose one, look at the roof from the ground: Duration shingles have a thicker, more dimensional profile with a slight shadow line; Oakridge is more traditional-looking with a cleaner edge; Supreme is flatter and usually found on older, simpler roof lines. Color matching matters more than most people think. San Jose’s sun fades shingles unevenly, so a brand-new bundle of the “same” color will often look slightly darker than the surrounding field for the first year. A good repair tech factors that in and may pull from a less-exposed area, like under a plumbing vent or behind a chimney, to blend better.
We install genuine Owens Corning shingles for Owens Corning roofs. Aftermarket generics exist, and they’re cheaper, but the weight, granule blend, and sealant chemistry are not always identical. On a repair job, the last thing you want is a mismatched patch that telegraphs the repair from the street. We’d rather use the real thing and stand behind it.

Signs Your Owens Corning Shingle Repair Is Failing
- Shingles in the yard or on the driveway after wind. This is the most common first sign in San Jose, especially in the fall when we get strong offshore gusts. Owens Corning shingles have a heat-activated sealant strip; if the original install was done on a cold day or the sealant never fully bonded, wind gets under the edge and peels them up. One or two down is a repair; a dozen is a conversation about the rest of the roof.
- Visible curling or cupping at the shingle edges. San Jose’s summer heat bakes shingles from above while attic heat pushes from below. Over time, an Owens Corning shingle can curl at the corners, and once it does, it catches wind and water more easily. Curled shingles near the ridge or rake edges fail faster.
- Dark, stained, or “balding” patches. Granule loss happens on every shingle eventually, but accelerated loss usually means a manufacturing defect or impact damage from a branch or boot. If a patch looks darker than the rest of the roof, the protective granules are thinning and the asphalt layer is exposed. That’s a shingle that needs replacement before the next rainy season.
- Water staining on the ceiling or in the attic after rain. By the time you see a ceiling stain, the water has already worked its way through the shingle, the underlayment, and the decking. That means the shingle failure has been going for a while. We find the leak point first, then assess how much decking is affected underneath.
- Missing ridge cap or hip shingles. Ridge cap and hip shingles take wind from two directions and wear faster than field shingles. If you see a gap at the peak, water has a direct path into the attic. This is one repair we recommend same-day or next-day, because every storm that passes through San Jose will send water straight through that gap.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a typical Owens Corning shingle repair in San Jose, here’s the honest range:
- Small patch (1-5 shingles, easy access): $350-$500 installed
- Mid-size repair (6-15 shingles, one or two roof areas): $500-$700 installed
- Larger repair (16+ shingles, or steep/cut-up roof): $700-$850+ installed
What drives the price up: roof pitch, two-story access, how many areas are involved, and whether the underlayment or decking underneath needs work. What’s included in our price: the shingles, the removal and disposal of the damaged ones, new fasteners, sealant, and a written guarantee on the repair before the crew leaves your property. If the repair fails inside the guarantee period, we come back at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. You’ll never get a “wait, we didn’t include that” conversation after we start. The price we hand you is the price we do the work for, period.
DIY or Call Us?
Roof work on a ladder is not the place to learn as you go. Falls from roofs put more people in emergency rooms each year than most homeowners realize, and San Jose’s two-story homes with tile or steep pitches make the stakes worse. That said, there are two safe things you can do from the ground: photograph the damage with a phone zoom, and check the yard for shingle pieces. Those photos help us quote accurately before we arrive.
What you shouldn’t do is climb up with a caulk gun and try to glue a lifted shingle back down. The sealant has failed mechanically, not cosmetically, and adhesive applied from above rarely holds. Also, walking on an Owens Corning roof in summer heat can do more damage than the original problem; hot shingles tear and granulate easily under foot traffic. If you’ve got a failing shingle, call us at (669) 274-0078 and we’ll get eyes on it the right way, with the right boots and the right harness.
FAQs
In the San Jose climate, Owens Corning Duration and Oakridge shingles typically last 20 to 30 years with correct installation and reasonable attic ventilation. Our hot, dry summers and occasional heavy winter rains mean the real enemies are UV degradation and sealant failure at the edges, not hail. Homes with poor attic ventilation lose shingles years earlier, because trapped heat cooks the asphalt from below.
A single damaged Owens Corning shingle can absolutely be replaced without touching the rest of the roof, as long as the surrounding shingles are still bonded and the underlayment below is intact. The key is getting the replacement shingle’s sealant strip to bond correctly, which a pro does by working carefully in the right temperature range. Call us at (669) 274-0078 and we’ll tell you after one look whether it’s a one-shingle fix or whether the damage has spread.
Most Owens Corning shingle repairs take between one and two hours on site, including setup, removal, replacement, cleanup, and the written guarantee we hand you before we leave. Larger repairs or steep, hard-to-access roofs can stretch that to a half day. We’ll give you the window, then hit it.
Yes. We carry the most common Owens Corning colors and profiles from the Duration and Oakridge lines on our trucks, so we can often complete a repair on the first visit. If your color or series is one we don’t have loaded that day, we can source it from our supplier yards in the San Jose area and be back within a day or two. We also stock compatible materials for GAF and CertainTeed roofs, so if you’re not sure what’s on your roof, we’ll match it either way.
